He certainly knows the thrill of the fight, and since his victory in South Carolina he's been telling the world that he's back on his feet.
But, as he faces a crucial primary battle in Florida and his opponents launch a blizzard of negative advertising, Newt Gingrich is increasingly having to fight to keep his dreams alive. Now he has another problem on his plate. His bombastic campaign song has landed the Republican presidential candidate in court.
Gingrich's use of Eye of the Tiger, the theme from Rocky III, has provoked the ire of Frankie Sullivan, co-writer of the song and owner of the production company Rude Music.
According to court documents filed in a Chicago court on Monday, Rude accuses Gingrich, his campaign Newt 2012 Inc and the advocacy group American Conservative Union of copyright infringement.
As seen at the 2011 Conservative Political Action Conference , Gingrich has repeatedly blazed into rallies to the strains of the Grammy award-winning tune by Survivor. At a recent event in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, his campaign website reported that Gingrich "entered the packed Moose Lodge for a speech as the song pulsed".
Rude wants a court order to block the unauthorised use of the song, and unspecified damages.
Gingrich, who is now facing unflattering comparisons between his physique and that of Sylvester Stallone's Rocky, is hardly the first politician to find himself in hot water over a campaign tune. Last year, his Republican ex-rival and Tea Party darling Michele Bachmann was told by Tom Petty's lawyers to stop using his song American Girl. The singer said nothing when Hillary Clinton used the song in her campaign for the 2008 Democratic nomination, but set his lawyers on George Bush in 2000 over his use of I Won't Back Down.
Barack Obama was sent a cease and desist letter by the soul legend Sam Moore in 2008 after playing his R&B hit Hold On! I'm Comin', while Ronald Reagan incurred the wrath of Bruce Springsteen in 1984 when he appealed to patriotic voters with his choice of Born in the USA.
And the phenomenon is not reserved for American politicians. Angela Merkel, seeking election as Germany's first female chancellor in 2005, irritated the Rolling Stones by blasting Angie at campaign rallies throughout Germany.
So, now that he is bereft of his macho theme song, what can we do to help poor old Newt? What songs do you think would be more appropriate?
