It’s not the first time it’s been done: Gorillaz pulled a similar stunt at the MTV awards in Lisbon in 2005, while older readers may recall Cliff Richard’s encounter with a huge floating head in the 80s West End musical Time. But Dr Dre and Snoop Dogg still wowed the crowd at Coachella on Sunday night when they brought Tupac back from the dead as a hologram.
The late rapper – shot dead in Las Vegas in 1996 – appeared to take the stage at the festival after a tribute performance of his hit California Love. This was followed by a rendition of Hail Mary before a duet with Snoop on Ain’t Nothin’ Like a Gangsta Party.
Snoop and Dr Dre were also joined by the real-life, in-the-flesh Eminem, 50 Cent, Wiz Khalifa and Kendrick Lamar, as well as by Warren G for a tribute to a second deceased hip-hop star, Nate Dogg.
Question is, now that the technology is there – it wasn’t so long ago that people were impressed by Natalie Cole duetting with her late father Nat King Cole on record – will we see more and more pop stars similarly resurrected?
Suggestions below, please. But also note, whatever terrible ideas you may have (The Beatles headline Glastonbury? That Michael Jackson comeback, finally?), Celine Dion has already done her worst.
