A small audience, a hushed crowd, music echoing round a tiny church … This weekend, the Other Voices festival returns to Dingle, Ireland, for three nights of music from both sides of the Atlantic, and in one case from the mid-Atlantic.
Since 2002, the 200-year-old St James's church in Dingle has hosted a series of intimate shows under the Other Voices banner. The first festival saw Steve Earle, Ocean Colour Scene and Rodrigo y Gabriela play, with Elbow, Richard Hawley, Amy Winehouse, the National and the xx among the acts following them to the west coast of Ireland in subsequent years.
The festival has since spread, with events in Derry, London and New York, and it will return to Derry from 7-9 February. "It's great to be back," organiser Philip King said in a statement. "Other Voices hits the even dozen, and what a trip it's been. We have photographed, recorded and archived the soundtrack of one of the country's most turbulent decades with some of Ireland's and the world's greatest artists. Their commitment, creativity and volunteerism have given us great hope for the future and the energy to continue on down the road on this expedition."
