Esther McVey, the employment minister, says an increase in the number of people in work and a decrease in those claiming benefits are positive. Unemployment declined by 18,000 in the three months to August as the number in work hit 29.87 million people. Wages rose by 0.7% in the year to August while inflation grew almost four times faster
