A newborn baby was thrown out of a car window on to the grass beside a busy street in North Lauderdale on Thursday afternoon, authorities said yesterday.
Florida police are looking for the parents of the boy, whose umbilical cord was still attached when he was found by a passer-by.
Doctors said he was not yet an hour old at the time.
A police spokesman said the infant had been brought to the sheriff's office and transferred to a local hospital.
His condition had improved from "critical" to "serious" by Thursday night.
It was unclear what injuries the baby had.
The woman who rescued the baby, who was inside a small plastic bag, said she had seen a man and woman arguing inside the vehicle. The baby had been thrown from the passenger side, landing about a metreaway.
The police did not release any information on the child's identity.
North Lauderdale is about 13 miles north-west of Fort Lauderdale.
