George W Bush

George W Bush
George W Bush

The Republican answer to Bill Clinton, Mr Bush appeals to a broad political spectrum. He has stayed deliberately vague on the issues, but preaches "compassionate conservatism", with government caring for society's most vulnerable citizens in an economy in transition.

Smoother than his notoriously tongue-tied dad, but has made some gaffes. He confused Slovakia and Slovenia. Expressed concern for the Grecians and the East Timorians. But the US public forgives those it embraces, like Ronald Reagan.

Comment: Bush gets rattled
It's Labor Day in America when everyone takes a day off - everyone, that is, except the spinners in the rival presidential camps. They are haunted by the legend that he who is ahead in the polls on Labor Day always wins the White House, so with the candidates neck and neck the tempo has accelerated sharply.

Full text of George W Bush's 'victory' speech
The last nineteen days have been extraordinary ones. Our nation watched as we were all reminded on a daily basis of the importance of each and every vote. We were reminded of the strength of our democracy - that while our system is not always perfect, it is fundamentally strong and far better than any other alternative.

Bush chooses Powell
Colin Powell, often described as the most popular man in America, yesterday became the nation's face on the world stage, appointed as Secretary of State by President-elect, George W. Bush. It was Bush's first and most important nomination; and the event - at a school near his ranch in Crawford, Texas - marked the launch of his embryonic presidency.
