Shakin' Stevens can't quite shake it up at the Glasonbury festival

A lukewarm reception for Shakin' Stevens as the Welsh Elvis performs at first ever British festival and fails to win over crowd

Musically, Friday at least, it seemed the geeks would inherit the earth, or at least the Glastonbury mud. New Yorkers Vampire Weekend drew a huge crowd to the Other Stage with their Afrobeat-tinged indie guitar pop, and there was a similarly impressive crowd for the maths rock of Glastonbury virgins Foals.

Festival-goers were prepared for the mud this year, soldiering on stoically. Few musicians have soldiered on more stoically than Edwyn Collins, who had to relearn his own songs after two cerebral haemorrhages. As he ambled onto the stage with the aid of a walking stick there was a palpable swell of goodwill.

The crowd was a little thinner on Saturday morning for Shakin' Stevens. Despite playing huge festivals on the continent, this was the Welsh Elvis's first ever British festival. As curveballs go, this was one that didn't really bounce. The knees probably aren't up to it anymore, but this was not the knock-kneed denim-clad rocker most remembered. It didn't even seem ironic.
