1 min The Danes get us away against the World Champions. Gronkjaer forces a corner early on. The Danish feel another was warranted following the cross, but the Austrian ref gives a goal kick.
2 A familiar sight for Newcastle fans - John Dahl Tomasson, through with just Barthez to beat, barely makes the keeper work with a poor shot. A golden opportunity.
4 Anelka breaks at pace but loses possession on the edge of the area.
5 Could be a fun year ahead at Old Trafford. Barthez comes racing out, misses the ball completely but takes out Lauren Blanc instead. Denmark cannot make use of the lose ball with no-one in between the posts.
6 An immense throw from Schmeichel sets the Danes breaking in numbers with the French badly organised. They fail to capitalise, though, Blanc making a late saving interception with Tomasson loitering.
9 Djorkaeff's 30-plus yard shot following a freekick clips the wall but goal kick given.
12 Ebbe Sand brings a good save from Barthez down to his right after the French defence backed off too much.
13 Anelka benefits from iffy linesman's decision, rounds Schmeichel brilliantly, but the angle and number of Danes back put him off and he puts it into the side-netting.
15 Manchester United keepers past and present indulge in a bit of a kicking competition, won by the Dane by about 15 yards.
16 GOAL! France 1 - 0 Denmark Schmeichel blocks Anelka's darting run, but the ball falls to a curiously placed Lauren Blanc (is that total football, then?) who couldn't miss. Schmeichel has a moan. Reassuring, in a way, to see some things don't change.
18 France playing some lovely stuff. This time the flag does come to Denmark's aid as Anelka (again) shapes up to do some more damage.
20 Gronkjaer looks willing down the Danish left. Takes on Thuram and wins a corner which goes behind without troubling the French at all.
24 Schjonberg thwarts Anelka at the near post. The corner is cleared by Schmeichel's fists.
29 A Danish corner comes to nothing, Barthez leaping for the ball extravagently.
31 The Danes try to find a way through the French back line but apparently lack the guile on this occasion at least.
32 Zidane pings one past Schmeichel's left post from about 25 yards. The French are making chances with measurably greater ease than their opponents.
34 Ooof! Heintze gets in Thuram's way as the Frenchman brings the ball out. It takes the Dane a good few seconds to recover from that.
37 Neilsen's 20 yarder doesn't really test Barthez.
39 Anelka robs the Danes who are lazy in taking a throw just inside the French half. He sets Henry off up the left. Despite the attention of two Danish defenders, the Arsenal man still manages to make his way to within sight of the goal and squeeze in a shot which only just goes wide.
44 Thuram steals possession as the Danes dally once again. He puts it right in front of Nicolas Anelka and only Schjonberg's presence of mind stops a clear run on goal. The resulting corner is cleared.
46 Desailly tries to jockey it out down by his left corner, but is too complacent. The throw-in sets up a few moments of Danish pressure which eventually lead to a corner, but the French deal with it easily.
47 Half time: France 1 - 0 Denmark

46 France kick off for the second half with neither team having made any changes.
47 Some fantastic play by Zidane up the left, working it out to Henry who just fails to keep control. Denmark clear.
48 Henry gets back to tackle a dithering Bisgaard. It seems the whole French team is willing to get their hands dirty.
50 Henriksen's cross following a half-cleared Danish corner keeps the pressure on the French goal but the second centre is no better than the first.
52 Dodgy, over-the-top challenge by Petit is not especially malicious but it gets him a ticking off. From the freekick Schjonberg hits one low which Barthez doesn't collect properly, but Tomasson characteristically faffs up the rebound when at least half a chance was on offer. Still, the Danes are in the hunt.
55 More like it from Denmark. They stamp out an attempted French counter-attack and turn it into a shooting chance. Bisgaard's effort is poor and gets a deflection anyway, but it is that kind of work rate which has thus far given France the advantage.
58 Blanc hits an incredible ball 50 yards to Henry's feet but the striker's attempt to clip it round Schmeichel is negligible.
59 Substitution for France, Patrick Viera replacing Youri Djorkaeff.
60 Gronkjaer, now playing up the right, gently whips in a cross but Sand's header is weak.
63 Henry's cross from the left wing inch perfect except for the fact its recipient, Anelka, hardly ever scores with his head. And he doesn't this time, either.
64 GOAL! France 2 - 0 Denmark Wooah! Henry shifts up the field like, well, something off a shiny shovel and is in the area before anyone in a white shirt can get even close. His pace makes it nigh on impossible for Schmeichel to close down the angles as is his want and the Arsenal man simply rolls it into the bottom right hand corner. Breath-taking.
67Anelka threatens to give us an action replay from the right, but he is blocked a little heavily (though legally, says the ref) and Denmark tidy up.
70 By cruel contrast, the Danes have lost what momentum they were building up at the start of the second half. A lumped ball over the top by Colding is pretty uninspiring stuff.
72 Double substitution for Denmark, roping off Bisgaard and Tofting and bringing on Martin Jorgensen and Thomas Gravesen.
76 Henry is off again and only a challenge by Colding on the goal line stops him from pulling it across for one of three waiting blue shirts. Henry looks awesome.
78 The fresh legged Jorgensen has a dip but his shot is woeful, nearly going out for a throw-in.
80 Substitution by Denmark, replacing the ineffective Tomasson with Mikkel Beck.
81 Henry squares a ball into Anelka's stride across the edge of the area but his shot is underhit into Schmeichel's gloves.
82 French substitution, Anelka coming off for Sylvian Wiltord.
83 A Danish freekick ends up at the feet of the scary-looking Schjonberg. His drive across the six-yard box is blocked somewhat masochistically by Lizerazu.
85 Brilliant play in midfield by France. First Wiltord plays a one-two with Deschamps to carry it out, then, having lost the ball, Petit wins it back before Neilsen could control it.
87 Schmeichel does just enough to stop Wiltord from clipping it past him after breaking through the middle. Zidanesticks the rebound on the Moon.
88 A little too much show-boating from Deschamps lets Jorgenesen have a go from 30 yards, but his shot is fielded well by Barthez.
91 Zidane wellies one hard and low right at Schmeichel and it is all he can do to parry it back out.
92 GOAL! France 3 - 0 Denmark Zidane slips it through to Viera who, confronted by Schmeichel, squares it to Wiltord who pushes it in easily. The scorer was certainly in an off-side position when the original ball was played through to Viera, but that would just be nit picking.
93 The ref puts Denmark out of their misery - full time: France 3 - 0 Denmark.

How did they qualify? Through the play-offs, like England. Only instead of losing to Scotland on a torturous night at Wembley, the Danes blitzed Israel with an 8-0 aggregate win. 'Like a fairytale,' said Peter Schmeichel.

France

How did they qualify? With palpitating hearts and shredded nerves. It all hung in the balance in the final minutes of the final day of the group. Having squeezed past plucky Iceland, the French waited on tenterhooks for news of Russia and the Ukraine which would decide their qualification fate... They cancelled each other out confirming France as group winners. Cue massive love in at the Stade de France.

The general assumption that Italy's presence will make this a disappointing or overly defensive final may be wide of the mark.

Can anyone stop France?

Already the European Championship is looking like one of the better tournaments, even if the ticketing arrangements have been as reliable as the distribution of gas bills in the Ottoman empire. Footballwise there is a freshness and vigour about Euro 2000 appropriate to the game's first big occasion of the new century.
