Angela Merkel thanks her supporters after winning an historic third term in the German elections. Her Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU), won 41.5% of the vote, finishing only five seats short of an absolute majority in the lower house. Merkel is on track to overtake Margaret Thatcher as Europe's longest-serving female leader
