Her Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU), won 41.5% of the vote, finishing only five seats short of an absolute majority in the lower house. Merkel is on track to overtake Margaret Thatcher as Europe's longest-serving female leader
