Letters: Bush's break

Letters: It pains me to defend George Bush (Report, August 27), but by spending a five-week working holiday in Texas, he is fulfilling the wishes of the framers of the US constitution.

It pains me to defend George Bush (Report, August 27), but by spending a five-week working holiday in Texas, he is fulfilling the wishes of the framers of the US constitution. Washington was chosen as the capital to encourage such annual sabbaticals. Its swampy site and steamy August weather was thought to discourage presidents spending too much time there. A fully staffed federal government all year round was an unwelcome thing in a country that had just shaken off the shackles of colonial power.
