Corgi congregation brings off the scale cuteness to California beach party

Corgi Beach Day features corgi limbo, corgi musical chairs and an attempt for a world record photo of ‘most corgis in a carrier’

A swarm of corgis descended upon California’s Huntington Beach on Saturday in a sandy celebration of their fluff, speed and cuteness.

Corgi Beach Day is a biannual festival held in southern California which welcomes corgis and “honorary corgis” for a day of activities that includes selfie stations, corgi races, costume competitions. This year, it perhaps provided a palate cleanser to a US news cycle dominated by Donald Trump’s hush payment indictment and the shooting deaths of three children and three staffers at a Nashville, Tennessee, elementary school.

Initially founded in 2012, the first Corgi Beach Day began with a mere 15 corgi attendees and has since spread to include up to 1,200 corgis and their owners.

Dubbed the “biggest corgi party on the planet”, Saturday’s festival saw corgis channel their best knitwear in a cardigan contest, followed by corgi musical chairs, a fluffiest corgi contest, a corgi limbo contest, a coconut cream pie eating contest, and an attempt to set a world record photo of the “most corgis in a carrier”.

The final event of the day was the Bacon Bubble Spectacular where corgis gathered to frolic in bacon-flavored bubbles.

Despite the festival being dedicated to corgis, all other breeds were welcome, according to festival organizers.

“Even if you don’t own a corgi, we’d love to see your other fur babies!” the organizers said on their website ahead of the event. “This is great for your pup to socialize, have a nice day out at the beach, and enjoy great freebies. It’s exciting to see other furry guests supporting their corgi cousins!”

Photos posted online featured owners alongside their corgis at the festival, as well as other dogs, including a golden retriever.

“If you’re not at Corgi Beach Day, then you’re not living life to the fullest. Jambo is an #honorarycorgi,” the retriever’s owner posted on Twitter.

Other pictures showed people walking corgis while carrying California flags altered to read “So Cal Corgi Nation”, along with a corgi emblem instead of Monarch the bear.

In addition to hosting vendors and activities, the festival’s organizers also partner with various local corgi and corgi mix rescue organizations. More than 100 dogs have been rescued since the festival began, according to organizers.
