Stephen Hill writes: Your obituary of the artist Albert Herbert (June 11) brought back strong memories of a much appreciated tutor and his passion for hollyhocks. With other students at Birmingham College of Art's school of painting, I visited Herbert's home in Leamington Spa for tea. We took the train, with this tiny, enthusiastic man pointing out hollyhocks on the embankments of the track. On the walk up to his house, he pointed out patches of waste ground and areas around lock-up garages, all with stately blooms two or three feet higher than himself, and all the result of his campaign of casting
hollyhock seeds wherever he went.
