The Questionnaire: Ivor Cutler

Ivor Cutler was born in Glasgow in 1923. After teaching for 31 years, he became a poet, humorist, composer, author and singer whom both Bertrand Russell and John Lennon cited as their hero. He has released two albums and performed at the Edinburgh Festival last year. He lives in London.

What is your idea of perfect happiness?
Turning into an albatross in the South Atlantic.

What is your greatest fear?
Boredom.

What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?
Worrying that I've got a big head and don't realise it.

What is the trait you most deplore in others?
Bigotry.

Where would you like to live?
I don't see the point - I'd have to take myself along.

What makes you depressed?
The growing realisation that Homo sapiens is a marred species.

What do you most dislike about your appearance?
My inability to cut a dash.

What is your most unappealing habit?
My inability to accept a gift graciously, as it puts a weight on me.

What is your favourite word?
Pragmatic.

Do you believe in capital punishment?
If it's painless euthanasia, I'd volunteer.

What or who is the greatest love of your life?
Myself, assuming that you can't properly love others until you love yourself.

What do you consider the most overrated virtue?
Any which you are able to practise because you've enough money to do so.

Have you ever said 'I love you' and not meant it?
If 'I love you' means 'You make me feel lovable', then I've always meant it.

Which words or phrases do you most overuse?
Crumbs!

How do you relax?
A bit at a time.

What would your motto be?
I'm not as clever as I really am.

What keeps you awake at night?
Draughts.

How would you like to die?
Holding my breath while reading a book of jokes.

Do you believe in life after death?
What the hell would I want to live for? I've done that.

How would you like to be remembered?
Lying in deep snow, licking an ice-cream cone.

What is the most important lesson life has taught you?
Creativity communicates best via the unconscious, bypassing the intellect.
