Alexander McQueen play to open in London

Theatre production takes inspiration from designer’s runway shows and depicts a meeting between McQueen and a girl who breaks into his home to steal a dress

Five years after his death, a new theatre production will explore “the visionary imagination and dark dream world” of the celebrated fashion designer Alexander McQueen.

McQueen, written by James Phillips (The Rubenstein Kiss), will be set over one night in London. It follows a girl who breaks into the designer’s home to steal a dress and is caught by McQueen. The play takes inspiration from his imaginative runway shows. John Caird directs, with production design by David Farley and choreography by Christopher Marney.

The play reportedly has the backing of the designer’s family. According to Phillips, McQueen’s sister Janet said the script was “true to his spirit”. The play will run from 12 May to 6 June 2015 at the St James theatre, London.

McQueen was found dead at home on 11 February 2010. The coroner’s report concluded that he “killed himself while the balance of his mind was disturbed”.

Savage Beauty, the first retrospective of the designer’s work to be presented in Europe, opens at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London on 14 March.
