County cricket – as it happened

Today we had Graham Hardcastle reporting from the Riverside Emirates

Yorkshire have broken the hugely frustrating seventh-wicket stand between Keaton Jennings and Usman Arshad. They had shared 156 before the latter (84) was caught behind off Ben Coad, who has claimed his maiden Championship wicket.

Durham are currently 417-7, leading by 266, which is enough to give the champions a few concerns overnight. No doubt, they will still remain confident of clinching a win, but it won’t be easy on a pitch which has shown plenty of signs of uneven bounce. Jennings currently has 170 not out to his name.

Durham’s lead is now beyond 200 (209 to be precise) at 360-6, with Keaton Jennings having reached 150. This revival reminds me so much of the Middlesex revival against Yorkshire at Lord’s last September when they beat Yorkshire having recovered from 0-3 in the first over the match. Durham’s situation wasn’t that perilous earlier on, I grant you, but they could now end up with the same result.

Over at Chelmsford, Leicestershire are chasing 159 in a minimum of 33 overs to beat Division Two leaders Essex. Back in Division One, Lancashire have fallen from 87-2 to 104-5 in their second innings against Warwickshire. Keith Barker has three wickets and the home lead is 149.

Tea at Durham, where they are still going strong in the second innings. Keaton Jennings, 134 not out, is now just 30 runs away from overtaking Kumar Sangakkara as the leading run-scorer in Division One. He currently has 650 to his name.

More importantly, Durham are 335-6 and lead by 184. He and Usman Arshad, 48 not out, have shared 83 unbroken for the seventh wicket, with the latter smacking Adam Lyth over wide long-on for six in the final over of the session.

It’s getting pretty interesting now, with Durham advancing to 303-6 in their second innings, which equates to a lead of 152. Keaton Jennings has 127 and Yorkshire-born Usman Arshad 26. They have shared 51 unbroken inside 10 overs for the seventh wicket.

Last night, Jennings mentioned that a lead of 200 would leave Durham something to play with in the final innings of the match. At present, they look good for a few more than that. Yorkshire, with only four frontline bowlers in their attack, are being frustrated.

Over at Chelmsford, meanwhile, Essex are hanging on against Leicestershire. They are 128-8 in their second innings, leading by 153, with the best part of 43 overs left in the match.

Surrey have won for the first time this season, with Zafar Ansari taking 6-36, including four in 13 balls, to bowl Notts out for 157 inside 49 overs as they chased 386. The two teams now have an identical won one, lost three and drawn four record and sit level on 72 points in seventh and eighth.

Updated

I’ve just been alerted to a great stat from Andrew Samson, of Test Match Special fame. Lancashire’s Matthew Parkinson is only the second England leg-spinner to take five wickets on County Championship debut since 1946 following his 5-46 against Warwickshire at Old Trafford earlier. The other, Adil Rashid, who took 6-67 for Yorkshire at Scarborough in 2006. Warwickshire were Rashid’s victims as well.

Here, Paul Collingwood has a fifty and Keaton Jennings is on 93. Durham are 207-4 and lead by 56. They have shared 102 for the fifth wicket and have given Yorkshire something to think about.

Zafar Ansari has taken three wickets in two overs to reduce Notts from 119-2 to 123-5 as they face a final day target of 386 at the Oval.

It’s about time the slow left-armer had something to smile about following a turbulent last eight or nine months through injury. He removed Jake Libby and Riki Wessels with successive deliveries before returning to get Samit Patel.

Here, Kane Williamson has just made the breakthrough by trapping Paul Collingwood lbw for 61, breaking his century stand with Keaton Jennings. Durham are 222-5 with a lead of 71.

Updated

Durham’s morning here, and their first session won in the match. They have turned a deficit of 53 overnight to a lead of 40 at lunch with six wickets in hand.

Keaton Jennings, 82 not out, and Paul Collingwood, unbeaten on 47, have shared 86 unbroken for the fifth wicket to take the home score to 191-4. Yorkshire have tried everything to make the breakthrough in improved batting conditions, including employing their trio of part-time off-spinners Adam Lyth, Kane Williamson and Jack Leaning.

As I type, Mark Wood is currently bowling in the middle as he steps up his recovery from ankle surgery, with a return to first-team action midway through next month a possibility.

At the Oval, Notts have recovered from 29-2 to lunch at 103-2 as they chase Surrey’s target of 386 on day four. Brendan Taylor is 54 not out. At Old Trafford, Lancashire are 8-0 in their second innings with a lead of 53 over Warwickshire.

Into Division Two, they have been off for bad light at Chelmsford, but play has resumed. Essex are 66-4 at lunch on day four against Leicestershire, leading by 91. There could still be a nail-biting finish there. The start of the match between Sussex and Northants at Arundel has been delayed by rain.

Glamorgan are 99-2 in their second innings at lunch on day four against Kent at Cardiff, leading by 168. Finally, Derbyshire are 468-5 at lunch on day three against Worcestershire. Billy Godleman’s 204 represents the first double century of his career.

Durham are into the lead now. At 158-4, they lead by seven runs, with Keaton Jennings and Paul Collingwood having shared 53 and counting for the fifth wicket. They have 72 and 24 respectively.

At Old Trafford, Warwickshire are 260-9 in reply to Lancashire’s 308. Matthew Parkinson has taken his third and fourth wickets in two balls, including Boyd Rankin bowled through the gate. Notts, meanwhile, are 63-2 chasing 386 at the Oval.

Apart from that wicket of Michael Richardson, it’s been a fairly quiet start here at the Riverside. Keaton Jennings has gone beyond 50 for the fifth time this season, but at the moment he and Paul Collingwood are happy to survive. I can’t see that changing for some time, really. Maybe when the lead is in the region of 50?

While the Yorkshire attack has been led expertly by Steve Patterson, in particular, and Tim Bresnan, a nod must go to the performance of Josh Shaw in this second innings. He has bowled a tight line and currently has figures of 0 for 22 from eight overs. Durham, at 129 for four, trail by 22.

Just what you need when you’re trying to turn a game around … a mid-pitch mix-up resulting in a run out. Durham have lost Michael Richardson to slip to 105 for four. Yorkshire conceded seven runs in the first over of the day, but have since built pressure with five successive maidens from the combination of Tim Bresnan and Steve Patterson.

They are now 42 runs behind, at 109 for four, with Keaton Jennings joined at the crease by Paul Collingwood. Credit to Ben Coad for the direct hit at the non-striker’s end from square-leg.

Over at the Oval, Notts have lost their first in pursuit of 386. Steven Mullaney was bowled by Ravi Rampaul, and they are now 20 for one.

Preamble

It’s a cloudy morning at the Riverside, where Yorkshire will go in search of a three-day win against third-placed Durham, although there is plenty of blue sky about too.

The reigning champions recently beat their joint Division One leaders Lancashire at Headingley, so a win here would complete an extremely productive couple of rounds for Andrew Gale and co, especially given their bowling stocks have been severely depleted here. If Durham are to turn this one around, then you would think that Keaton Jennings will have to play a significant role. The opener will begin today unbeaten on 46 with his side 53 runs in arrears with seven wickets in hand. The left-handed Jennings has flourished at the top of the order this season, and, like Scott Borthwick, has gone beyond 550 runs.

Surrey are also well placed to wrap up victory today against Notts at the Oval, although that one is into its fourth day. Surrey are 385 runs ahead in their second innings with five wickets remaining. At Old Trafford, Warwickshire will begin day three on 202-6 in their first-innings reply to Lancashire’s 308. They were 94 for six, after two debut wickets for the leg-spinner Matthew Parkinson, but Keith Barker and Tim Ambrose steadied the ship with 57 and 48 apiece. That wraps up the state of play in Division One, but there are also three matches in play in Division Two and one more due to start at midday – Sussex v Northants at Arundel.

Essex and Leicestershire will probably have to settle for a draw unless the captains get together ahead of the fourth day. Essex, 22 for one in their second innings, only lead by 47 at Chelmsford. It is a similar situation at Cardiff, with Glamorgan 91 runs ahead with all 10 wickets in hand in their second innings against Kent. They will also have to go some to set a target.

The rain-affected clash at Derby between Derbyshire and Worcestershire heads into its third day today, with the hosts recovering superbly from 13 for two to close last night on 319 for three thanks to centuries from Billy Godleman and Wayne Madsen. Godleman will begin the day with a career best 157 not out to his name.
