Jimmy White out of snooker world championship after Ken Doherty defeat

• Six-time world runner-up loses 10-3 to 1997 champion
• Parrott will be relegated from world tour after defeat

Jimmy White has failed to reach next month's world championship. The 47-year-old Londoner, who has lost six world finals, suffered a 10-3 defeat by Ken Doherty in the penultimate qualifying round at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield.

It was 10 minutes past midnight today when White overcame the world No90, Mark Boyle, a 28-year-old Glasgow postman, 10-8, and he was back in action at 10am against the 1997 world champion. He lost five of the first six frames, trailed 6-3 at lunch and did not win a frame in the evening.

John Parrott's 9-6 defeat by a Chinese teenager, Anda Zhang, meant that he is sure to finish outside the top 64 in the end of season rankings. The 1991 world champion will thus be relegated from the tour and will retire if he is not awarded a wildcard for next season.

White cannot now finish outside the top 64 and is therefore certain of starting a 31st year as a tour professional.
