The oldest woman to become a mother in Britain has gone back to work four weeks after giving birth to her son, Jolyon. Elizabeth Adeney, 66, returned to her office last week, leaving her baby at home with a nanny.
Adeney, who was briefly married 20 years ago and has since lived alone, continued working a five-day week until days before the birth. The managing director of Delmore Ltd, a plastics and textile firm, conceived Jolyon - which means "young at heart" - through IVF. He was delivered by caesarean at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, on 26 May, weighing 5lb 3oz.
Women who give birth by caesarean section are usually advised to rest for up to eight weeks. The NHS does not recommend fertility treatment for the over-40s. Adeney had IVF in Ukraine.
