The video for Newcastle five piece Shields' new single, Mezzanine – premiered here – features all the things we've come to expect from videos these days. Firstly, there are lots of clips of the band performing the song in a live setting, which helps put across the fact they all play their own instruments. Then, running parallel to that, is the video's main narrative thread, which involves a couple slowly falling in love via intimate dinner dates, some under-the-cover action and a nice break somewhere sunny. Mind you, it all ends in disaster after the man pushes the lady off a chest of drawers after he walks in on her having an orgy in a drawer, which then leads to her being horrifically mauled by a ginger cat. Oh, and did we mention they're all sock puppets? That's important. As with all situations in life, the video's improved immeasurably by the appearance of colourful socks pretending to be humans and the song – a big clomping synth spectacular that's reminiscent of a sunnier Everything Everything – isn't bad either. Mezzanine is taken from the band's forthcoming debut EP, Kaleidoscope, which also features a cover of SBTRKT's Pharaohs.
The Kaleidoscope EP will be free to download from the band's official website on 19 November. They play London's Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen on 18 October
