Green Man 2012: festival preview

Is the corporatism of mainstream festivals getting you down? Then try the Brecon Beacons for an indie alternative

It started in 2003 as a one-day event for 300 people, but now Green Man is one the biggest music festivals in Wales. Taking place in the Brecon Beacons over four days, and boasting several music stages, cinema and comedy tents, it prides itself as an alternative to the increasingly crowded corporate festival circuit.

The festival has expanded its lineup, after starting as a strictly folky affair, while still retaining its outsider credentials. Post-rock quartet Explosions in the Sky headlined last year alongside Iron and Wine, and Fleet Foxes – take a look at our Green Man 2011 gallery. This year, Mogwai are among the headliners, with the likes of Junior Boys, Metronomy and Ghostpoet further down the bill.

Below are our picks from each day, along with links to some of our coverage of the artists, exclusive videos, album streams, playlists and other pieces to read, watch and listen to, starting with these video highlights from last year's event:

Mogwai

The Scottish post-rockers' epic sound was made to headline festivals. Read about their 2011 Earth Division EP here, with a track-by-track guide by Stuart Braithwaite.

Dexys

The band formerly known as Dexys Midnight Runners. Read singer Kevin Rowland on his sartorial influences, and check out Kitty Empire on why their live show was worth the 27-year wait.

Savages

"Jazzily fluid and exploratory but tight, not sloppy and grungy," says Paul Lester. Read Kate Mossman on their live performance.

tUnE-yArDs

Perhaps the best nursery teacher you never had. Read Gareth Grundy on her outstanding live show, and listen to our exclusive album stream from last year if you're still unconvinced.

Ghostpoet

A jazzy-minded Mercury prize nominee. "Ghostpoet's music is perfect for that atmosphere of muggy dread", which is useful when you're playing Wales in August.

King Creosote & Jon Hopkins

One is a Scottish singer-songwriter, one is a London-based producer. Read Jude Rodger's feature on the duo, and Alexis Petridis's five-star review of their live show.

Field Music

Watch the north-east indie-rock band perform (I Keep Thinking About) A New Thing at our studios. Read them in conversation with Tom Lamont earlier this year, and see where they figure in Sunderland's contemporary music scene.

Van Morrison

The evergreen Northern Irishman just keeps on giving. Read Dave Simpson's thoughts on the man known for his "unpredictability and grumpiness", as well as Laura Barton on why Astral Weeks is her favourite album.

Metronomy

The electro-pop giants from Devon have been covered in critical acclaim during the last year. Paul MacInnes explains how frontman Joe Mount "found his voice", and listen to the band in conversation on Music Weekly.
