Joni Mitchell attends gig as she continues recovery from aneurysm

Singer goes to a Chick Corea concert in LA in her first public appearance since she was hospitalised in 2015

Joni Mitchell has made her first public appearance since being hospitalised in 2015 following a brain aneurysm.

The appearance, in which she seemed happy and relaxed, was at a Chick Corea concert on 20 August, held at the Catalina Bar and Grill in Los Angeles. Photographs were posted on the official Joni Mitchell site the following morning.

It will be welcome news to fans, considering the gravity of Mitchell’s situation. In March 2015, the folk singer was found unconscious at her LA home and, according to her friends, was unable to speak for some time.

However, by June of that year, Mitchell was undertaking daily physical therapy and was able to return home the following month. In October, her friend and folk singer Judy Collins provided an update on Mitchell’s condition, writing on Facebook: “I have just heard from a close mutual friend that Joni is walking, talking, painting some, doing much rehab every day, and making good progress. I have another friend who went through something similar – it does take a long time.”

Details since then have been scant, but it appears now that Mitchell is recovering well. The caption alongside the photograph on her site reads: “We are thrilled to see Joni out and about again!”
