The Sonic Youth founder and honorary east London resident may be most famous for his experiments with strange guitar tunings and freeform noise, but his last solo album, the 2010 Beck produced Demolished Thoughts, saw Thurston Moore reinvent himself as a serene acoustic singer-songwriter.
His fifth solo album, The Best Day, finds Moore returning to alternative rock in a more direct and aggressive form: harnessing his punk spirit with the white noise opener of Detonation, and references to “revolution”, it sounds as if his new existence in London has triggered an album of anti-authority and activism.
The Best Day is out on 20 October on Matador Records – but we’ve got a stream ahead of its release. Take a listen and let us know your thoughts.
