All About That Bass, Meghan Trainor’s “body positive” anthem has rumbled in to the top of the national singles chart. Following months of YouTube views and weeks of international media coverage, the song went straight to No 1 after finally going on physical and digital sale in the UK.
“It feels unreal! I still don’t believe it,” Trainor told the Official Charts Company. All About That Bass actually charted for the first time last week, reaching No 33: although it wasn’t yet available for purchase, it was listed on digital streaming services. Because streams are now factored into the UK chart results, Trainor’s debut became the first song to reach the country’s Top 40 without a single physical or digital sale.
Behind Trainor, the rest of the top five singles are a reordered version of last week’s chart. Jessie J’s Bang Bang slips one place to No 2, followed by Taylor Swift, Sigma and Calvin Harris. The top 10’s only new entry is the upbeat pop-dance single Sunlight, by a Belgian producer called the Magician.
On the albums front, George Ezra’s Wanted on Voyage has finally topped the chart after 11 weeks in the top five. Alongside Sam Smith and Ed Sheeran, Ezra has been a fixture of the summer billboard. It’s “amazing” to finally crown the list, Ezra said in a statement, “over three months since my album came out”. He also said: “Keep your pecker up and all the very best!”
Despite a strong midweek showing for Jamie T, the British songwriter wasn’t able to keep up with Smith’s In the Lonely Hour or Sheeran’s X: Carry on the Grudge, Jamie T’s third LP, debuts at No 4. Oasis are also back in the charts, reaching No 7 with the deluxe reissue of 1995’s (What’s the Story) Morning Glory?, and one of Prince’s two new albums becomes his highest-charting album in a decade: Art Official Age lands at No 8.
