Trent Reznor: 'a staleness has permeated rock music'

The Nine Inch Nails frontman has criticised the absence of integrity in modern music, stating that artists pay too much attention to 'hip blogs'

• Trent Reznor: 'I'm not at war with myself as I once was'

Trent Reznor has criticised the state of modern rock music, describing a "conservative nature" that permeates rock music.

Speaking to the Daily Record, the often outspoken Nine Inch Nails frontman talked candidly about his family, his past struggles with drugs and alcohol and his age, comparing in particular the current music scene with his past experiences. "A pretty conservative nature has crept into music and I don’t mean sonically," Reznor began.

"When you see a lot more excitement generated from the dance tent, I do think a staleness has permeated [rock music]."

The singer - who is quick to acknowledge his perspective on the subject by stating that he speaks "as an old guy" - also urges bands to push boundaries and to ignore the pressures of critical response. He claims that a lot of young musicians' lives have been geared solely towards being entertainers: “I get the sense that a lot of bands today are designing themselves to get a good review in the hip blogs and that is probably the safest and most cowardly thing you can do as an artist."

“If you have something to say, then say it. Express yourself and break the rules.”

The 48-year-old is currently touring with Nine Inch Nails throughout Europe, before kicking off the band co-headline a tour with Soundgarden 19 July at Las Vegas' Planet Hollywood.
