DJ Harvey, Glasgow

It's hard to describe DJ Harvey without cracking a wry half-smile. A punk rock drummer who (inspired by youthful visits to NYC) became a graffiti bomber and DJ, Harvey made his name in the late 80s by hosting raucous all-night parties in Cambridge and Brighton. These were in perfect tandem with the birth of house music in the US, but with a decidedly crazy and typically eccentric UK edge. Harvey's twin glories are the now legendary underground label Black Cock (which unearths old disco gems and re-edits them to glorious effect), and his relentless DJing marathons. Spanning house, techno, disco and nearly every shade in between, he played with a fever that earned him residencies during Ministry Of Sound's 90s heyday. With such a weighty pedigree to his name – he brought Paradise Garage's Larry Levan to the UK shortly before his death – Harvey's return to the circuit in recent years has rightly been warmly welcomed.

Secretsundaze, London

Kicking off another summer of woozy, housey Sunday sessions are peripatetic Balearic crew Secretsundaze, who under the stewardship of James Priestley and Giles Smith continue to cock a snook at inclement weather, gastropub roasts, and being able to do anything of real worth on a Monday. Except the latter doesn't matter on a bank holiday, and so they're starting at 2pm and finishing at 6am. The first half is on the acoustically superb terrace at Studio 338 in Greenwich, with Mosca, DJ Q and Wbeeza bringing summery, gadabout garage-house; they're joined by euphoric Detroit minimalist Rolando. Come 10pm it's time to head to Corsica Studios, where Amir Alexander and Virginia play hypnotic minimal house, while in room two Andrew Ashong and Alexander Nut play sun-kissed funk, disco, Afro and more. A garlanded, ambrosia-splashed gateway to the summer months.

Shangaan Bank Holiday, Sheffield

There are few characters in dance music as colourful as Nozinja, the South African founder and self-styled kingpin of the Shangaan Electro craze. His hyper-colourful and ambitious movement has breathed new life into the traditional Shangaan sound and is enjoying an ever-growing cult following across Europe. Nozinja now comes to Sheffield, signed to the city's own Warp, and is pushing the beats-per-minute ratio higher than ever. As part of another thoughtfully constructed and ambitious lineup by promoters Banana Hill, similarly frenetic sounds come from Afrobeat-loving locals Blood Sport, the curiously monikered Mango Rescue Team and Edinburgh's impeccable No Globe DJ squad.

Bloc, London

Autumn Street Studios' unprepossessing single-room space is perfect for letting DJs really stretch their legs, and it's now given over to Omar-S. He's from the housier end of Detroit's crumbling cybernetic ecology, with gospel-shaded tracks shorn of frills to leave sheer dancefloor immediacy. His label FXHE is in a purple patch: a 10-year compilation is out soon, featuring the likes of FIT's Enter The Fog, which was one of 2013's most treasured deep cuts, and Omar's equally lauded 2011 track Here's Your Trance Now Dance! Head down early for Alden Tyrell in support with synth-driven cosmic energy.

Booty Call, Maidstone

The hardest UK sound killers are let loose for the Booty Call street party's return, with a supersized lineup of garage, jungle and old-skool across three arenas. Ms Dynamite heads up the bill in her gobby hypegirl guise, as well as DJ EZ, whose quick-cutting mixing style and rowdy grime, bassline house and garage blend is a must-hear. Rave veterans Mike "Ruffcut" Lloyd, Slipmatt and Rinse FM's Uncle Dugs help soundtrack the journey through UK club sounds. Airhorns at the ready…
