Vera Lynn announces new album

Celebrating her 97th birthday next week, the ‘Forces’ sweetheart’ says she will release a new album to mark the 70th anniversary of the D-day landings

Vera Lynn has announced plans for a new album, entitled Vera Lynn: National Treasure - the Ultimate Collection.

The collection, which will feature unreleased material and classic tracks, will be released in early June to mark the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings. Lynn, who turns 97 next week, was a second world war icon and is known as the “Forces’ sweetheart”. “I think it’s wonderful that my songs are still enjoyed, especially if it encourages people to commemorate what happened 70 years ago,” Lynn said in a statement.

Lynn, who lifted the spirits of millions during the war with songs such as We’ll Meet Again and The White Cliffs of Dover, says her new collection will pull together more than 40 recordings that have been remastered, some of which were previously only available on 78rpm vinyl. “It’s moving for me to relive those days, and humbling to know that people still think of me. After all, it was simply my duty to keep singing,” she added.

In 2009, Lynn enjoyed success at the age of 92 with a greatest hits collection, We’ll Meet Again. It topped the UK album chart, making her the oldest living artist to score a No 1 record. Lynn was appointed an OBE in 1969 and a DBE in 1975.
