Pussy Riot reportedly collaborating with members of Le Tigre

Nadezhda Tolokonnikova says the Russian punks have been creating original songs and videos with JD Samson

Pussy Riot are reportedly collaborating in the studio with members of Le Tigre. Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina may “at some point” record an album with JD Samson and Johanna Fateman.

Le Tigre singer JD Samson recently shared a photograph of herself and bandmate Johanna Fateman spending “a night in the studio” with Tolokonnikova, Alyokhina, and Fateman’s young daughter. After Pitchfork reported on the snap, Fateman joked that they were “sleeping on the real story, which is pussy riot collab with my five-year-old daughter”.

Tolokonnikova separately confirmed that they were working with Le Tigre on original songs and, more importantly, videos. “Maybe at some point in the future we will do an album, but right now we want to make videos,” she told NME.

Since their release from prison last year, Tolokonnikova and Alyokhina have been touring the world, drawing attention to their media and prison advocacy projects. They have also appeared at events, such as alongside Madonna at a concert in New York and performing Le Tigre’s Deceptacon at Vice magazine’s recent 20th anniversary party. They have used appearance fees from these gigs to bankroll their political endeavours.

Pussy Riot’s last major video scheme, shot during the Sochi Olympics, resulted in an attack by Cossack militia and, ultimately, their own arrest. Upon release from jail, five members of the group, including Tolokonnikova and Alyokhina, performed their song Putin Will Teach You to Love the Motherland.
