Willie Nelson's hair up for sale

Country star’s braids and Buddy Holly’s motorbike among items owned by the late Waylon Jennings that are being auctioned

Fans of music history will have the chance to buy some unusual memorabilia in October, including some of Willie Nelson’s hair and Buddy Holly’s motorcycle. The items are part of the estate of Waylon Jennings, which is holding an auction of around 2,000 items owned by the country singer, who died in 2002.

In Phoenix, Arizona on 5 October, the Musical Instrument Museum will host the sale. According to the New York Times, Jennings’ personal effects included a pair of Hank Williams’ cowboy boots and a set of braids, formerly attached to Nelson’s head, which were presented to Jennings at a party in 1983. Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash had apparently gathered a group of friends to celebrate Jennings’ newfound sobriety.

As for the motorbike, it was one of Holly’s last major purchases, bought around a year before the Peggy Sue songwriter died in a 1959 aeroplane crash. Jennings was also supposed to be on that flight: he was touring as Holly’s bassist, but gave up his seat to JP Richardson, the Big Bopper, just before departure. Two of Holly’s associates presented Jennings with the black Ariel Cyclone about 20 years later, as a birthday present.

Jennings himself sold much of his other memorabilia before his death. Curious parties were invited to Jennings’ own home, in Brentwood, Tennessee, to examine everything from concert postings to stage costumes, plus Jennings’ gun collection and a 1974 Cadillac. “This calibre of sale doesn’t come along every day,” his sale agent, Berenice Denton, told the Associated Press at the time.

The auction, organised by Guernsey’s, will take place in Phoenix, Arizona, on 5 October.
