Justin Bieber's mother producing anti-abortion film

Singer's mother hopes Crossroads documentary will raise $10m for 'crisis centres' that try to deter women from having abortions

Justin Bieber's mother is producing a new anti-abortion documentary. Through screenings of Crossroads, Pattie Mallette is hoping to raise $10m (£6.3m) for "crisis centres" that try to deter women from having abortions.

Directed by Alonso Alvarez, Crossroads was produced by Mallette and the makers of the 2010 feature Bella. The short film stars Swiss singer Patrick Nuo and actor Ali Landry, a former Miss USA. By holding screening parties on 28 February, the film-makers aim to raise millions for anti-abortion institutions in the US.

"I hope the film will encourage young women all over the world, just like me, to let them know that there is a place to go, people who will take care of you and a safe home to live in if you are pregnant and think you have nowhere else to turn," Mallette said.

Although Mallette's son has not commented on Crescendo, the movie's official website is full of photographs of Bieber and his mother. "I really don't believe in abortion. It's like killing a baby," the singer said in 2011, when he was 17. Mallete has always been vocal about her position on the issue: as a teenager, she claims she was pressured to have an abortion. "I knew that I had to do what it took," she wrote in her memoir. "I just couldn't abort him."
