Paul McCartney and Kanye West to perform at 12.12.12 concert

Superstorm Sandy benefit concert at Madison Square Garden will also feature Bruce Springsteen, the Who and Alicia Keys

Paul McCartney, Kanye West and Bruce Springsteen have been added to the bill for 12.12.12, next month's star-studded benefit for victims of superstorm Sandy. The showcase of "musical royalty" will take place at Madison Square Garden in New York, with proceeds going to the Robin Hood Relief Fund.

The 12.12.12 lineup is impressive – alongside McCartney, West and Springsteen, the gig will see appearances by the Who, Roger Waters, Alicia Keys, Jon Bon Jovi and Billy Joel. More "legendary performers" will be announced soon, as well as ticket details. As this is a fundraiser, it is likely the concert will be broadcast worldwide.

12.12.12 is organised by Clear Channel Media and Entertainment, the Madison Square Garden Company and the Weinstein Company. This is the same group that produced 2001's Concert for New York City, a 9/11 benefit that raised more than $30m (£19m). McCartney, Bon Jovi and the Who also performed at that five-and-a-half-hour show, as did Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, David Bowie, Jay-Z and Elton John.

Two weeks after Sandy's landfall in the US, thousands of people in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut are still without power. 12.12.12 is just the latest benefit concert to be announced, with more fundraisers being staged every day.
