REM's Peter Buck working on solo album

The guitarist is recording his solo debut, according to REM collaborator Scott McCaughey. And he may even sing …

Peter Buck may become the first member of REM to release a post-breakup solo album. The guitarist is apparently working on his very own LP, which could even feature the musician's famously unheard singing voice.

One of the band's long-time collaborators, guitarist Scott McCaughey, told Seattle's KIRO 97.3: "Peter's making this record of his." McCaughey offered no further details about the project, saying simply it will be "pretty 'out'". Buck will probably sing on the record, but is unlikely to sing in concert. He is also considering releasing the LP on vinyl only, with no download version.

Meanwhile, Buck and McCaughey are still busy as members of the Baseball Project, a conceptual supergroup that also features Dream Syndicate's Steve Wynn. "[Peter's] not as big of a baseball freak as the rest of us are, but, you know – he likes playing music," McCaughey explained. They have recorded three albums together. And there are plans to reconvene Tired Pony, the country outfit formed by Buck, McCaughey and Snow Patrol's Gary Lightbody, as soon as Snow Patrol finish their current tour. "We'll definitely do another record," McCaughey said.

While Buck has released numerous albums with side projects such as the Minus 5, Hindu Love Gods and as a member of Robyn Hitchcock's band, he has never released a solo record. Even REM frontman Michael Stipe, who was expected to start making music on his own, has called such an idea "unfathomable".
