The Troggs' Reg Presley diagnosed with lung cancer

Singer announces retirement and thanks fans for their 'love, loyalty and support over the years'

After half a century of music, Troggs singer Reg Presley has announced his retirement after being diagnosed with lung cancer.

"I shall miss you all," Presley wrote on the Troggs official website. Although the garage rock legends haven't released a studio album since 1992's Athens Andover, they have continued to tour. They were scheduled to play two gigs in Germany in early December, when Presley fell ill.

"As you all know I was taken ill whilst doing a gig," Presley explained. "During my stay in hospital, tests showed that in fact I have lung cancer. I am receiving chemotherapy treatment and at the moment not feeling too bad. However I've had to call time on the Troggs and retire. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for the cards and calls and for your love, loyalty and support over the years."

The Troggs were formed in Andover, England in 1964. They are best known for their version of Wild Thing, which reached No 1 in 1966. The band scored six more top 20 hits, including With a Girl Like You and Love Is All Around. The Troggs' original drummer, Ronnie Bond, died in 1992; founding guitarist Dave Wright died in 2008.
