Saint Etienne are back, with a new single out and their eighth studio album – their first for seven years – due to follow. The single, Tonight, is available as a free donwload via their website.
Tonight is a serious pop confection, reuniting Saint Etienne with Tim Powell of the Xenomania production team. Chart wizard Richard X mixed the glittery indie banger. "Tonight is about the anticipation of going to see your favourite group," Saint Etienne's Bob Stanley – a contributor to the Guardian – said. "For some reason, I imagine this show is at the Forum in Kentish Town. The whole album is about the power of pop, how it affects and shapes your life. People talk about the problem of landfill indie, but there's so much landfill pop around at the moment – we're trying to do something about it."
Although Saint Etienne have released a couple of singles in recent years, their last album was 2005's Tales from Turnpike House. In August 2010, they said they had a new record "lightly pencilled in" for summer 2011.
