Six emerging acts will play the first in a new series of New Band of the Day gigs, based on Paul Lester's daily column for theguardian.com/music. Bos Angeles, Big Deal and Jodie Marie join the previously announced Murray James, Josh Osho and headliners Worship at the Barfly show in Camden, London, on 26 January. Tickets can be booked here.
Bos Angeles were New Band of the Day No 1,124. Lester hailed the three-piece band, from Boscombe near Bournemouth, for doing "that Jan & Dean-if-they-were-on-Factory thing really well".
Last week, Big Deal became New Band of the Day No 1,183. The band comprises 29-year old Kacey Underwood, an American, and 18-year old Londoner Alice Costelloe. "The drama of implied intimacy" in their music-making was noted by Lester, but as he added, it "would be nothing if it wasn't played out against a backdrop of narcotic melodies and aching chords."
Murray James is the latest act to feature in New Band of the Day. "Listened to only cursorily," Lester said of new act No 1,187, "you could easily dismiss James as a one-man Stereophonics or a superior Frankie Cocozza, a kid with a gruff voice and a guitar trying to pass himself off as a raw and raspy blues man with a tale to tell.
"But actually there's real sorrow we're discerning from his voice, and his songs transcend mere soulboy fakery, elevating this beyond X Factor posing and Stars in Their Eyes mannequin mannerisms." James comes from Milford-on-Sea on the south coast of England.
Two of the other acts on the bill have previously appeared in the column: rockers Worship were New Band No 1,094, and singer-songwriter Josh Osho was No 1,050. Jodie Marie awaits her turn in the spotlight.
"I was one of the first people to write about artists such as Lady Gaga and Adele in the column," said Lester, "so fingers crossed for this lot …"
Tickets to the gig cost £8. Guardian Extra members can purchase tickets for £7 here.
