Dave Grohl joins the Ratt pack

Foo Fighters frontman working on mystery project with 80s hair-metal band

Dave Grohl is no stranger to collaborations. He's recruited assorted metal legends to play with him in Probot, filled on drums with Killing Joke and Queens of the Stone Age, worked with Cat Power and Nine Inch Nails, and been part of the hard rock supergroup Them Crooked Vultures. But the latest team-up involving the Foo Fighters frontman is likely to raise more eyebrows than usual.

According to a Facebook post, Grohl is to work with members of the hair-metal band Ratt. The project was announced on the social networking site by Ratt's lead singer, Stephen Pearcy, who said Grohl would be overseeing a mysterious and "way cool thing".

Pearcy posted a photograph of himself, Grohl and Ratt guitarist Warren de Martini. "We'll let [Dave] tell you about when he's ready, kidz," he tweeted. "[It's] not for a Ratt record … We're just privileged to b a part of [it]."

Whatever Grohl is doing with Ratt, it begins with a single track. "Warren and I are recording an original song," Pearcy said, describing it as a "Grohl song idea open to Ratt madness".

During their 80s heyday, Ratt were one of the leading LA glam metal bands, with their first four albums achieving platinum status in the US. They fell apart after Pearcy left in 1992, and have reunited twice since. The current incarnation's most recent album, Infestation, reached No 30 in the US in 2010.
