Rumer, Wretch 32 and Summer Camp are sharing the bill for the first live version of Guardian Music's New Band of the Day series. The three diverse acts were all featured in the column at an early stage of their careers, and now will play an exclusive show for members of Extra, the free membership scheme for readers of the Guardian and Observer.
New Band of the Day is written by Paul Lester, who recently celebrated his 1,000th column in the series. Talking of the gig, he said: "Like space travel and cloning, they said it could never happen. What, write about a new band, every day? Now, four years and 1,000 New Bands of the Day later, the next giant leap for music-kind: the first ever New Band of the Day night. I can't quite believe artists of the calibre of Rumer, Wretch 32 and Summer Camp will be performing – in honour of a feature that I write in my bedroom every morning."
One of the breakthrough stars of 2011, Rumer featured in the column in July last year, as new artist No 830. "Rumer," Lester wrote, "is the best act of her kind that we've heard in ages. If we were Jann Wenner [of Rolling Stone magazine], we'd put her on the cover tomorrow." She told the Guardian that a series of New Band of the Day gigs would provide "a great opportunity to support live music and new talent".
Wretch 32 was new act No 911, featuring in the column in November last year. The young MC from Tottenham, north London, was described as "the rapper's rapper – he's collaborated with Chipmunk, Wiley, Sway and Mike Skinner, and he's had acclaim from all the people he'll be hoping to join in the charts next year." Now with two top five hits under his belt, he said: "It's definitely a different world from the underground. But I can't wait to hear Rumer."
The third act, completing the New Band of the Day live lineup, is Summer Camp, aka New Band of the Day No 707, aka mysterious and already much-loved indie duo Jeremy Warmsley and Elizabeth Sankey. They told Paul Lester "we kind of imagine that we're writing songs for an 80s teen movie".
The gig takes place on Wednesday 25 May in the Star of Kings, London N1. Tickets are now available to members of Extra, which is free to join.
