Three Six Mafia win an Oscar

5 March 2006: Number 48 in our series of the 50 key events in the history of R&B and hip-hop music

A clue as to who would win the 2006 Oscar for best song was visible on presenter Queen Latifah's face when, upon opening the winner's envelope, she gasped: "Oh my God!". Indeed, few truly expected Three Six Mafia's It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp to win, even after they replaced "bitches" with "witches" during the first ever performance by a hip-hop crew at the event earlier that evening. This because their win marked another first: they were the first rap group to ever win an Oscar.
