Boyzone: Brother | CD review

(Polydor)

When Stephen Gately died last October, Boyzone were recording their first album in more than a decade. The four remaining members of the boy band have reshaped the album into a tribute, and it opens with Gately singing "I will learn to live before I die" on the Mika-penned single "Give it All Away". It's a case of unexceptional material taking on new poignancy under tragic circumstances. Elsewhere, there are meditations on loss but Boyzone are too positive to let their work brood for long. On "Love is a Hurricane" they even engage in a spot of whooping stadium rock.
