Twenty years after their debut LP, the Vaselines are to release a second studio album. Glasgow's indie-pop duo, a favourite band of Nirvana's Kurt Cobain, will issue Sex With An X on 14 September.
The Vaselines only returned to live performance in the last few years, reforming in 2006 and playing their first gigs since 1990. Led by Eugene Kelly and Frances McKee, the reunion seemed temporary until the band revealed yesterday that they have written 14 new songs. As with their debut, Sex With An X was recorded with Edinburgh producer Jamie Watson, with Belle and Sebastian's Stevie Jackson and Bob Kildea contributing guitar and bass, and the 1990s' Michael McGaughrin on drums. Besides the new tracks, including Overweight But Over You and Exit the Vaselines, the band have also written two B-sides.
Formed in 1986, the Vaselines released two EPs and one LP before disbanding. Although they didn't attract much attention while they were together, the band gained a considerable posthumous following thanks to Cobain, who cited them as one of his biggest influences, and covered several of their songs with Nirvana. Cobain's daughter, Frances, may even have been named after McKee.
The Vaselines have also announced a 10-date UK tour in September. A new song, called I Hate the 80s, is available to download at the group's website.
