Pete Doherty and Carl Barât may soon be writing songs together again – not for the Libertines, but for Babyshambles. As Doherty readies the third Babyshambles album, the singer said he plans to bring material to his former collaborator, because "inevitably something great [will] happen".
"There's a couple of songs at the moment that have been stuck on the treadmill for a while that I need to get finished," Doherty told Vogue Italia. Although he has been collaborating with Babyshambles' regular guitarist, Mick Whitnall, these "really strong" tracks "are struggling to get out". "I might ... have to show them to Carl, because in the old days that's what we'd do," Doherty said. "If I had a great idea I'd share it with Carl and inevitably something great would happen."
After a six-year hiatus, the Libertines reunited for a handful of performances earlier this summer. Although they have announced no plans for future dates – let alone a new album – Barât said last week they will "probably ... play a few more gigs". "Now we've got the option to start a new chapter," Barât told a German music blog. "I don't know if and when."
Speaking about the new Babyshambles tracks, Doherty used similar language. "I just feel that when they're finished it will be a new chapter," he said. Perhaps this new chapter will be surprisingly similar to the old.
