White Denim's reputation has been built with little fanfare, but a great deal of noise. A trio from Austin, Texas, this, essentially, is a band where the concept - "three guys record deranged music in caravan" - is woefully inadequate at expressing the freakiness of the racket that they actually make. So far, the band have made slow but incremental progress: a debut album, Workout Holiday, last year received cordial notices but it's been the reception that's been accorded their new one, Fits, that gives the idea that something more substantial is happening. An album which takes its pointers as much from the complex punk of the Minutemen, as it does from the psychedelia of the Jimi Hendrix Experience, it's as much a joy to hear as it is difficult to pin down. Live, as you might hope, a rich seam of chaos is opened up.
