More than 50,000 music lovers - some in inventive costumes, left - decamped to the Isle of Wight this weekend for the first major festival of the summer. The event takes its name from the Isle of Wight Festival begun in 1968 and banned by an act of parliament, following worries over the huge crowds that gathered in 1970 to see Jimi Hendrix, the Doors, the Who and Miles Davis, among others. The event was revived in 2002, and this year's line up has included the Prodigy, Stereophonics, Razorlight, Pixies and Basement Jaxx, along with a 1980s revival including Ultravox, Simple Minds and Bananarama. Neil Young closes the show tonight.
