Nine Inch Nails to 'wave goodbye' after tour with Jane's Addiction

No, you haven't been transported back to 1991. Trent Reznor's industrial metal monoliths are to embark on a farewell tour with one of their earliest gig partners

Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor announced both a world tour and an impending hiatus, yesterday. His fans won't know whether to don their celebratory black T-shirts or weep into their consolatory black bedspreads.

Reznor will put his band to rest after a farewell tour with one of NIN's earliest gig partners – Jane's Addiction.

He outlined his plans in a website posting entitled "A note from Trent and a wave goodbye". "2009 marks the 20th anniversary of our first releases," he wrote. "Last year's Lights in the Sky tour was something I'm quite proud of and seems like the culmination of what I could pull off in terms of an elaborate production."

"After some thought, we decided to book a last run of shows across the globe this year. The approach to these shows is quite different from last year – much more raw, spontaneous and less scripted. Fun for us and a different way for you to see us and wave goodbye."

The first of these "raw", "goodbye" gigs took place in Auckland, New Zealand earlier this week. Though he had expressed nervousness about this "first show of the new tour", Reznor later reported a "mission accomplished". "Very strange show for us to play," he wrote on Twitter. "Completely different and exciting. Nothing was familiar to us."

Reznor has spent recent weeks in the studio with Jane's Addiction, producing their first album in six years. He became involved after a friend told him about an "unbelievable" concert in Los Angeles, which prompted Reznor to dig out his dusty vinyl. "[I was] amazed by how vital they sound," Reznor wrote. "In this current climate, mostly dominated by poseurs and pussies, it was refreshing to hear something that sounded dangerous, volatile, beautiful and SINCERE. Emails were sent, phone calls were made, dinner was arranged, ideas were discussed and the next thing I know we're in the studio experimenting. We laugh, we get to know each other, we cry, we yell, we almost quit [and] we record LOTS of guitar solos."

Reviving a pairing that was born in the 1991 Lollapalooza festival tour, Jane's Addiction will join Nine Inch Nails on several of their forthcoming dates, including a gig at the Sasquatch festival in Washington state.

After that, it's hard to know what Reznor has in mind. He may simply be retiring the NIN name – or he may be retiring from music altogether. The last time Nine Inch Nails "disappeared", after 1999's The Fragile, it took six years for Reznor to return. That gap stands in stark contrast to the past four years, which has seen the group release four separate albums.
