Some people escape to the country; for many years, Wilco's Jeff Tweedy has been running from it. Having pretty much invented the revitalised country rock that we call "alt-country" or "Americana" with Uncle Tupelo at the start of the 1990s, his current band Wilco have spent the past 10 years taking his music to odder and further-flung places. Ornamented by the playing of leftfield talents like guitarist Nels Cline, Wilco albums like A Ghost Is Born brought influences like krautrock to the band's plaid-shirt heartland, and it was a cause for celebration. But most recent work (the great Sky Blue Sky and new one, Wilco (The Album)) has seen a softening of this approach. Wilco's music retains edginess, but now offers an occasional rural retreat.
