Given the general smoking-a-joint-and-working-on-some-beats feel of the place, it's a wonder Brighton hasn't got a longer tradition of music festivals. Of late, the city has been making up for lost time: first with the town centre-based Loop and now with Beachdown, perched inland on top of a hill with the not even remotely funny name of Devil's Dyke. Now in its second year, physically speaking, Beachdown has a lot to recommend it, from sea views to good drainage (not here will you find mud-strafed campers), and possible record-breaking fun in an attempt for the largest number of people simultaneously playing the spoons. Musically, there's some good stuff too. Grace Jones continues her run of striking festival performances, while Super Furry Animals, having returned to form with this year's Dark Days/Light Years album, will be worth seeing. The Fall, Grandmaster Flash, Mulatu Astatke are among the other legendary presences.
