Country music was ever a sad story with some dim hope of consolation, and the career of Emmylou Harris provides just such a tale. In and out of fashion, dropped by one audience and picked up by another, Emmylou has been adored by the counterculture, the country music establishment, and now enjoys a regal status as a heroic survivor - her closest contemporary is arguably Neil Young. These days a collaborator with the likes of Young, Conor Oberst and Elvis Costello, she is a reminder that, even in country music, some things have to change. Happily, the purity of her voice is one of the things that does not.
