In 1950s New York, the avant gardes in music and the visual arts were closely linked. Composers like John Cage, Morton Feldman and Earle Brown had regular contact with painters like Rothko, Guston and other abstract expressionists, and concerts would be held in galleries. So it was three artists - Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg and Emile de Antonio - who organised a giant retrospective of John Cage's music in New York Town Hall in 1958, including the premiere of his Concert for piano and orchestra. A recreation of that historic occasion closes the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, although instead of Cage's Sonatas and Interludes, the programme includes six specially commissioned new works, composed in response to that prepared-piano classic.
