Pop review: David Byrne: Big Love: Hymnal

(Todomundo)

A musician of many guises, the ex-Talking Heads frontman turns soundtracker once more (he won an Oscar for 1987's The Last Emperor) with this largely instrumental score for HBO Mormon saga Big Love. Taking inspiration from the denomination's hymns, he conjures an appropriately hushed, wintry ambience, with sparse orchestrations built on chiming percussion, gracious strings and stately brass, all arranged as crisply as newly fallen snow. The effect is pretty if ultimately slight, with most tracks hovering around the two-minute mark, but a spooky version of Elvis Presley's 'Blue Hawaii' makes a closing curveball worth waiting for.

Now it's singalong with Byrne and Eno

Despite two tracks of wilful weirdness, much of this record draws on folk, country, soul and the group-singing of gospel and campfires
