The Miracle of the Voice
Natalie Dessay (soprano), various orchestras/conductors
(Virgin Classics 0094636333229 - 2CDs) £12.99

Fresh from a triumph as Marie in Covent Garden's surprise hit La fille du regiment, French soprano Natalie Dessay reminds us of her more sensual qualities in this lush, generous double-album anthology. From the opening notes of the 'Bell Song' from Delibes's Lakme, she teams up with an array of outstanding orchestras and conductors for a feast of glorious singing, mostly of Romantic French repertoire, but ranging as far afield as Mozart, Strauss, Stravinsky and Bernstein. Perfect Valentine's Day listening.

Chopin
Sonata No 2, Scherzos 1-4
Simon Trpceski (piano)
(EMI 3 75586 2) £10.99

Still only 27, Macedonian pianist Simon Trpceski impressed with his debut disc of Rachmaninov. Now he turns his talents to Chopin, whose 'Slavic temperament and romantic disposition' he feels he shares. Some kind of musical kinship is clear from the tempestuous opening of the B flat sonata, which proceeds via the sombre funeral march to an equally whirlwind presto conclusion. Add his virtuoso response to the fiendish challenges of the four scherzi, and you have an exciting disc from a thrilling young pianist of ferocious prowess.

Susan Bullock (soprano), Malcolm Martineau (piano)
(Avie AV 2117) £13.99

One of our leading dramatic sopranos, who has established herself as a formidable Wagnerian, Susan Bullock includes his wondrous 'Wesendonck Lieder' in this impressive, eclectic recital with Malcolm Martineau. Beautifully recorded at the Crear studio in Argyllshire, her programme ranges from Prokofiev's 'Five Poems of Anna Akhmatova' and Britten's 'The Poet's Echo' to songs by Quilter and Rorem. Love is the common theme, giving Bullock the chance to demonstrate her rare dynamic range as much as her vivid musical intelligence and personality.
