CD: The Cake, More of Cake, Please

(Rev-Ola)

Shuffle off Spice Women: a more flavoursome girl-group comeback in 2007 was the re-emergence of the Cake's late-60s back catalogue. Three sharp New York teenagers who later collaborated with the Animals and Soft Machine, their music swung between acid-test wall-of-sound pop (a great take on Jackie DeShannon's Baby, It's You), piano-doused Motown (PT 280), and the dizzying prospect of early African hi-life mixed with orchestral Bach (Extroverted Introvert). The tart, resonant vocals of Jeanette Jacobs, Barbara Morillo and Eleanor Barooshian were often several freeways short of the required notes, but no matter. A barrel full of sparkiness.
