Grand Union Orchestra
Hull
Jazz music is full of human stories, but it's too laidback and ambiguous for explicitly big-ideas panoramas, or the dissemination of lessons-for-us-all. Britain's long-running Grand Union Orchestra has proved itself increasingly adept at negotiating this snag, and brings its long experience to the new Can't Chain Up Me Mind show, commemorating the bicentenary of the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade with lyrics by Caribbean poet and novelist Valerie Bloom and South African poet John Matshikiza. It's nothing less than a history of jazz - a big agenda, but Grand Union has been handling those for years.
